# Quail Incubation Temperature & Humidity: The Two Numbers That Decide Your Hatch

What temperature and humidity for quail eggs?

99.5 °F (37.5 °C) in a forced-air incubator, with 45–55% humidity for the first two weeks, raised to 65–75% for the final three days.

Still-air incubators run hotter at the top: \~102 °F measured level with the top of the eggs. Humidity is the contested number; the range and the reasoning are below.

Set a forced-air incubator to **99.5 °F (37.5 °C)** and you're done with the easy number. Temperature is the closest thing quail incubation has to a solved problem: university extension services and the major hatcheries land on 99.5–100 °F, and the differences between them are smaller than the error bars on most home incubators' displays.

Humidity is where the arguing happens. We'll get to it. First, the settled part.

### Temperature: one number, held ruthlessly

The target isn't just 99.5 °F — it's 99.5 °F *without drama*. Embryos tolerate a stable temperature slightly off-target far better than a perfect average made of swings. Mississippi State Extension quantifies the tolerance: minor fluctuations under half a degree are fine, but total variance should never exceed 1 °F. Sustained excursions beyond that cost hatch rate. Two practical rules that matter more than chasing decimals:

1. **Don't trust the built-in display.** Put at least one independent, calibrated thermometer inside at egg height. Keepers consistently report factory sensors reading a degree or two off, and a degree is a lot over seventeen days.
2. **If your incubator only does whole degrees, 100 °F is fine.** Extension guidance itself is written as 99–100 °F, and plenty of working hatcheries say exactly this.

**Still-air incubators are the exception.** Without a fan, heat layers; it's warmer at the top of the box than the bottom. Mississippi State Extension is explicit: run still-air machines at **102 °F, with the thermometer bulb level with the top of the eggs** — and hatchery guidance concurs at 101–102 °F with a calibrated probe at egg height. That's not "quail like it hotter"; it's the same egg-level temperature reached through layered air. If you take one thing from this section: in a still-air machine, thermometer height *is* the measurement.

### Humidity: the contested number

Most guides skip this part: the experts do not agree on incubation humidity. Pretending they do is how beginners end up arguing with their own hygrometer.

**Where sources disagree — incubation humidity (days 1 through lockdown):**

That's a spread from 30% to 60% among people who successfully hatch quail. It's not that most of them are wrong; it's that **humidity is a proxy, not a target**. The thing that actually matters is *moisture loss from the egg*: over incubation, an egg must lose enough water to form the air cell the chick breathes from while hatching. Too little loss (humidity too high) and the chick can drown at pip; too much (too dry) and the membrane toughens and shrink-wraps the chick.

The right humidity *for you* therefore depends on your climate, your altitude, your ventilation, and your particular machine — which is why a keeper in Arizona and a keeper in Florida can run 20 points apart and both be right.

**What we'd actually do:** start in the **45–55%** band. It's where extension guidance and major-hatchery practice overlap, and it's forgiving. Then judge by the eggs, not the dial: candle at day 7 and 14 and check air-cell growth ([candling guide](https://www.quailstead.com/hatching/candling/) has the pictures). Air cells too small → lower humidity next time or now; too large → raise it. One hatch of your own data beats every table on the internet, including this one.

(The dry-hatch school isn't crazy, incidentally. It's mostly keepers in humid climates whose *effective* moisture loss at "30% on the dial" matches what drier regions get at 45%. Same egg physics, different rooms.)

### Lockdown: the humidity spike

Three days before expected hatch — day 14–15 for Coturnix — turning stops and humidity goes **up to 65–75%**. The hatching chick has to rotate inside the shell and cut its way around the circumference; high humidity keeps the exposed inner membrane pliable while it works. Sources quibble at the edges here too, but the cluster is tight: **mid-60s to mid-70s**. Inside that band, stability again beats precision.

### Turning: the third number

Turn at least **three times a day** until lockdown, at roughly even intervals. More frequent is better: extension guidance runs three to six turns daily, and automatic turners do it hourly or continuously. If turning by hand, mark eggs X on one side, O on the other, and always turn an odd number of times daily so eggs don't spend every night on the same side. Then stop completely at lockdown.

### The setup checklist

- Run the incubator **empty for 24–48 hours** first; confirm it *holds* 99.5 °F and your target humidity before any egg goes in.
- Independent calibrated thermometer + hygrometer at egg height. Two is better.
- Room matters: constant-temperature room, out of sunlight, away from drafts and vents.

### FAQ

**Fahrenheit or Celsius — what's 99.5 °F?**  
37.5 °C. Still-air: \~102 °F ≈ 38.9 °C at egg-top height.

**My humidity swings 10 points when the heater cycles. Panic?**  
No. Short cycles around a sane average are normal; sustained wrong averages are the problem. Track the trend, not the flicker.

**Can I incubate quail and chicken eggs together?**  
Temperature works (both 99.5 °F), but the calendar doesn't: chickens run 21 days to quail's 17–18, so lockdown conflicts. Possible with staggered setting; not a beginner move.

**Do bobwhite eggs use the same settings?**  
Same temperature; much longer calendar (23–24 days, lockdown \~day 21). Humidity is disputed for bobwhite too: university production guides (UGA) run the setter at about 60%, while some home-hatchery guidance runs drier and blames excess incubation humidity for most failed hatches.
